This year our 6th Graders are taking part in an English-language programme which aims to foster the development of creative skills through engagement with literary texts that raise awareness of sociocultural values as shared cultural elements and promote the development of a global citizen identity. The programme, which is organised by the four ELT School Advisors of our school district, follows the launch of 2018 as the European Year of Cultural Heritage that puts the spotlight on Europe’s wealth of cultural heritage, showcasing its role in fostering a shared sense of identity and building the future of Europe.

The main objectives of the programme are:

  • to encourage students to use their creativity and develop new ideas in follow-up activities,
  • to enlarge their worldviews about cultures and different groups of people, as well as about the social problems a society may be undergoing,
  • to promote critical thinking and examination of moral attitudes,
  • to foster peer respect and group cooperation,
  • to motivate students to become life-long readers,
  • to bring authenticity into the classroom thereby promoting language development and communication skills.

In sum, the programme will make use of literature as a springboard for a multitude of holistic learning that will promote universal sociocultural values, also helping students to become knowledge producers as compared to the familiar role of knowledge consumers.
